Overview
CheckEngine ("we," "the site," "this tool") is an informational website that helps you look up likely causes, recommended service, and commonly needed parts for a vehicle check engine (DTC) code. This policy explains what information the site handles and how.
Information We Collect
We do not operate a server or database. CheckEngine is a static page that runs entirely in your browser. This means:
- The make, model, year, and check engine code you type into the form are used only in your browser to look up results. Nothing you type is sent to us or stored anywhere.
- We do not use accounts, logins, or cookies to track you.
- We do not collect names, emails, or any personal information through the site itself.
Location Data
The "Who Can Fix This Near You" section includes a button labeled "Use My Location to Find Nearby Help." Location is only requested if you click that button, and your browser will show its own native permission prompt before anything happens. If you decline or ignore the prompt, no location data is accessed.
If you approve the prompt, your device's location is used as follows:
- It is sent to OpenStreetMap's Overpass API (a free, community-run mapping service) to look up nearby auto repair shops.
- It is used to build links to Google Maps and to Advance Auto Parts' store locator, so you can view directions or the nearest store.
- Your location is never sent to us, never stored, and is only used for that single lookup, in your browser, at the moment you click the button.
Third-Party Links and Services
CheckEngine links out to third-party websites and calls third-party services, including:
- Advance Auto Parts (shop.advanceautoparts.com, stores.advanceautoparts.com) โ for parts shopping and store location links.
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API (overpass-api.de) โ for the nearby repair shop lookup described above.
- Google Maps โ for directions and map search links.
Each of these services has its own privacy policy governing how they handle any data sent to them (including your location, if you use the nearby-help feature). We encourage you to review their policies directly. CheckEngine is not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party sites.
Cookies
CheckEngine does not currently use cookies or any browser storage to track visitors. If this changes in the future (for example, if analytics are added), this policy will be updated first, and where required, a consent notice will be shown.
Children's Privacy
CheckEngine is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent revision.
